The Best Mobile Amps and USB DACs for the HEDDphone® TWO and TWO GT

The Best Mobile Amps and USB DACs for the HEDDphone® TWO and TWO GT

The HEDDphone® TWO and HEDDphone® TWO GT, like other high-end headphones, require dedicated amplification to achieve a satisfactory level of loudness and unlock their full sonic potential.

Ensuring you have the appropriate mobile amplification ready for your HEDDphone® will allow you to get the most from its unique technology and design when working on the road or in secondary studios.

Why do the HEDDphone® TWO and TWO GT require dedicated amplification?

The short answer is that clean, robust amplification is needed to allow the Air Motion Transformer (AMT) driver within the HEDDphone® to deliver its world-class sonic clarity and accuracy. Without it, you simply won't get the full experience.

The slightly longer answer is tied to our patented Variable Velocity Transform (VVT) technology, which enables the use of our AMT drivers in a headphone shell. To reproduce a large frequency range from 10Hz to 40KHz, the HEDDphone® utilizes a folded Kapton diaphragm. The magnetic gap inside the driver matches the size of the deepest fold. Because a larger gap demands either higher magnetic flux or a stronger electrical signal to deliver sufficient Sound Pressure Level (SPL), a powerful amplifier is essential. It provides the necessary voltage and current to let the AMT driver work exactly as intended, delivering an exceptional, uncompressed sonic experience.

What are the amplification requirements?

Choosing the right, and ideally most efficient, amplifier for your mobile rig requires starting with the amplifier's power output specifications. This should exceed the HEDDphone®'s requirements to provide adequate dynamic range and prevent distortion at high monitoring volumes.

While the HEDDphone® can function with mobile headphone amplifiers that provide a minimum of 200mW of power, we recommend 1 Watt (1000mW) at 42 Ohms to unlock its full dynamic potential and transient response. The more clean power your amplifier can provide, the more sonic accuracy and low-frequency definition you can expect at any listening level.

Which USB DAC/Amps do we recommend?

As with all HEDD products, the HEDDphone® offers a precise, honest, and neutral sound signature. It is therefore ideally suited for an amplifier that follows a similar approach and avoids coloring the sound through its amplification stage.

If you are looking for an all-in-one USB DAC and headphone amplifier combo for travel or mobile use, we can suggest the following candidates:

1. RME ADI-2 DAC FS

The Verdict: Our Professional Daily Driver

Max Power: ~1.1W

We are close partners with RME and use both the standard ADI-2 DAC FS and Pro models internally across our own offices and development setups. It is a definitive recommendation. At over 1 Watt of output, it hits our exact power target for the HEDDphone® series. The digital-to-analog conversion is completely flawless, it features an incredibly powerful built-in parametric EQ/DSP for monitoring adjustment, and it is built like a tank for professional longevity.

2. JDS Labs Element IV

The Verdict: Exceptional Power and Headroom

Max Power: ~2.4W

The JDS Labs Element IV provides an immense amount of clean power—the strongest of the mobile-capable desktop units listed here. This significant power headroom allows the AMT driver to deliver lightning-fast transient responses with a highly transparent, clean soundstage. It is an excellent choice for a streamlined desktop USB setup where power limitations are never a factor.

3. Chord Mojo 2

The Verdict: Best for True Portability

Max Power: ~0.5W

If a true pocket-sized mobile rig is your priority, the Chord Mojo 2 is a highly viable candidate. In fact, one of our own team members relies on the Mojo 2 right here in the office. While it sits lower on the raw power scale than the desktop heavyweights, its unique FPGA architecture offers a beautifully balanced, precise audio presentation that pairs wonderfully with the HEDDphone® on the go.

4. Grace Design m900

The Verdict: Built for Pro Audio Workflows

Max Power: ~0.6–0.8W

The Grace Design m900 strikes an excellent compromise between desktop utility and compact convenience. It was engineered with an explicitly utilitarian, pro-audio mindset. It delivers plenty of clean current to efficiently drive the HEDDphone®'s folds, making it a reliable tool for audio engineers who need to mix accurately while traveling.

Max Output Power Comparison:

JDS Labs Element IV (~2.4W) > RME ADI-2 DAC FS (~1.1W) > Grace Design m900 (~0.6–0.8W) > Chord Mojo 2 (~0.5W)

A Note on Purely Analog Amps: The Topping L50

We frequently receive questions about budget-friendly amplifiers like the Topping L50. We think very highly of Topping products—in fact, we use Topping standalone DACs in several of our Studio setups.

The L50 is an exceptional headphone amplifier that provides more than enough clean, clear power to drive the HEDDphone® TWO or TWO GT. However, please keep in mind that the L50 is a purely analog amplifier. It does not feature a built-in USB or Thunderbolt DAC. If you intend to use it for a mobile laptop rig, you will need to pair it with a separate USB audio interface or external DAC to feed it an analog signal.

Summary: Matching Your Workflow

  • Choose the RME ADI-2 DAC FS if you require the ultimate studio-proven tool with precise digital control and onboard DSP.
  • Choose the JDS Labs Element IV if your workflow demands maximum power headroom and clean, analytical transient response.
  • Choose the Chord Mojo 2 or Grace Design m900 if you want an honest, uncolored sonic performance in a highly mobile, travel-friendly layout.
